Type I vs Type II Ultrapure Water: Choosing the Right Grade for Your Lab
Taj Water Team · · 7 min read
Choose Type I vs Type II ultra-purified water for Lower Mainland labs. Custom grades, lab reports with every order, and free quotes from Port Coquitlam.
When a lab or clinic upgrades an analyzer, opens a new bench, or tightens quality records before year-end workload, water grade stops being a footnote. Type I and Type II ultra-purified water are not the same as everyday purified drinking water or distilled water for appliances — and the wrong grade can waste budget or leave documentation thin.
Taj Water is locally owned in Port Coquitlam and produces custom ultra-purified water by quote for labs, medical and clinical facilities, electronics, pharma and cosmetic work, universities, and other purity-critical users across Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Orders are made to agreed specs, independently lab-tested, and shipped with a lab report. This guide covers Type I versus Type II in plain language, why documentation matters, how the quote works, and when to contact us for a quote on ultra-purified water.
This post is about lab-grade custom water — not jug cadence, cooler rental, tote sizing, espresso water, or commercial filter cartridges.
Ultra-purified vs everyday purified and distilled
Everyday 5-gallon purified drinking water is multi-stage filtered for homes and offices. Distilled water is produced through filtration and distillation for commercial kitchens, coffee and espresso equipment, steamers, autoclaves, batteries, cooling systems, and similar uses — and is not necessary for everyday drinking.
Ultra-purified water goes further. Production uses reverse osmosis, deionization, and sub-micron filtration aimed at much higher purity targets. It is a premium, by-quote service, not an off-the-shelf jug SKU. Browse ultra-purified water, or start from all products if you also need jugs, totes, or dispensers beside a lab order.
If your kitchen team is still choosing between purified and distilled for espresso or steam, see distilled vs purified water for commercial kitchens. If volume is the bigger question, bulk totes vs 5-gallon jugs covers supply format — a different decision from purity grade.
Type I vs Type II in plain language
Taj produces ultra-purified water to the grade you specify. Common targets include:
- Type I — often called ultrapure, with a resistivity target of 18.2 MΩ·cm
- Type II — a pure grade commonly discussed in the 1–15 MΩ·cm range
- Custom — other resistivity or parameter targets when your protocol names them
Resistivity is a practical shorthand for how little ionic content remains: higher resistivity means fewer dissolved ions. Exact protocols belong to your lab quality system; we produce to the specs you send, then document the batch.
When labs typically ask for Type I
Type I is the usual ask when trace ions, organics, or particulates can skew sensitive work — analytical chemistry, spectrometry, chromatography, cell culture, and similar benches where the blank water is part of the method. Facilities that already run Type I systems and need backup supply, overflow volume, or documented batches without expanding their own plant often request Type I.
When Type II is enough
Type II often fits general lab rinse, media prep, glassware stages that do not need the absolute top resistivity band, and support processes where a documented pure grade matters more than chasing 18.2 MΩ·cm every time. Matching grade to the step saves cost without under-serving the method.
If you are unsure, bring instrument manuals, SOP excerpts, or a prior certificate of analysis to the quote talk. We will map Type I, Type II, or custom — not push one SKU for every room.
Why the lab report matters
Every ultra-purified order ships with a lab report from an independent testing laboratory. Reports typically cover contaminant screening, conductivity or resistivity measurements, and lab information — documentation you can file with quality records, audit binders, or research notes.
For Burnaby clinics, Vancouver university labs, and Port Coquitlam R&D suites alike, the report is often as important as the water. Multi-stage purification to agreed specifications, plus a report with every order, keeps purchasing and quality aligned. Details live on the ultra-purified product page.
How Taj’s custom quote process works
- Tell us your specifications — Type I, Type II, custom resistivity, volume, packaging preferences, and delivery rhythm. Use contact or call during open hours.
- We produce to those specs — reverse osmosis, deionization, and sub-micron filtration aimed at the targets you approved.
- Independent lab testing — each order is tested so results can be checked against the agreed profile.
- Report prepared and shipped with the water — contaminant screening, conductivity/resistivity, and lab info travel with the delivery.
- Delivered to your facility — across Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland on our own routes. Single orders, recurring cycles, and larger volumes are all options. No long-term contracts locking you in.
Delivery for jug and specialty orders is usually arranged for this week; next-day slots are often available in most areas — call to confirm. Ultra-pure timing depends on production and lab turnaround, so share deadlines early.
Who uses ultra-purified water
Practical users include:
- Laboratories and research — analytical, academic, and contract labs that need a documented blank
- Medical and clinical facilities — autoclaves, analyzers, and sterile-processing pathways that name a purity grade
- Pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulation — compounding and product development that files water quality with batch records
- Electronics and precision cleaning — rinse steps where ionic residue hurts yield
- Universities and teaching labs — departments that need reliable ultra-pure supply without owning a full plant
- Hydroponics, batteries, aquariums, and food/beverage — where a mineral-free or tightly controlled base water matters to the process
If filter housings or jug supply sit beside the ultra-pure order, our commercial filter replacement program and water products pages cover those lanes separately.
Cities and delivery from Port Coquitlam
Taj Water runs its own fleet from 1770 McLean Ave Unit 7, Port Coquitlam — no third-party couriers. Ultra-purified deliveries follow the same fourteen-city Lower Mainland footprint as our other products.
Places where lab and facility quotes come up often:
- Port Coquitlam — HQ city for Tri-Cities research and clinic suites
- Vancouver — university, hospital-adjacent, and downtown lab demand
- Burnaby — commercial corridors and multi-tenant lab buildings
- Surrey — growing industrial and clinical campuses
- Coquitlam — Tri-Cities facilities tying purity grade to winter project calendars

FAQ
What is the difference between Type I and Type II ultra-purified water?
Type I targets ultrapure resistivity around 18.2 MΩ·cm. Type II is commonly discussed in the 1–15 MΩ·cm range. Both are custom grades Taj can produce to your specs; which one you need depends on the method or equipment manual, not a one-size label.
How is ultra-purified water different from purified or distilled?
Purified drinking water and distilled water serve homes, offices, kitchens, and equipment that need mineral-free supply. Ultra-purified water combines additional purification stages for much higher purity targets and ships with lab documentation. Start at ultra-purified water or compare everyday options on products/water.
Does every order include a lab report?
Yes. Each ultra-purified order is independently lab-tested and ships with a report covering contaminant screening, conductivity or resistivity, and lab information — ready for your quality files.
Can I set a recurring ultra-pure delivery?
Yes. Recurring schedules are available; each delivery is still produced and tested individually. Adjust volume or pause when projects change — no long-term lock-in.
Do you install home softeners or whole-home RO systems?
No. Our focus is the products listed on all products: purified and distilled 5-gallon supply, dispensers, cups, totes, ultra-purified by quote, and commercial filter management. Home softeners, whole-home RO installs, and residential well testing sit outside this service.
How do I start a quote?
Share purity grade (Type I, Type II, or custom), volume, delivery city, and any deadline via contact. Prefer the phone? Call (778) 504-7880. Browse ultra-purified water first if you want the process overview.
